F key functions

F1 key - For help

F1 key can be pressed for help. You can press the F1 key if you want to troubleshoot any problem or need assistance to carry out any work.

F2 key - For renaming

F2 key- For renaming any file or folder (select any file/folder and press F2 to rename it).

F3 key - For search option

F3 key can be pressed anywhere (on desktop, my computer or when browsing a drive/folder) to open the search dialog box.

F4 key - For address bar

F4 key can be clicked on my computer window or internet explorer window for selecting (or clicking) the address bar.

F5 key - to refresh

F5 key can be pressed on my computer windows, when exploring a folder, on the desktop or on the internet explorer window to refresh the current screen.

If on the desktop or on a folder, the contents will be refreshed & if using the internet, the current webpage will be refreshed and shown again.

F8 key - Windows advanced choices menu

Press the F8 button while Windows is booting/restarting/starting up. After pressing the F8 key you will encounter the following menu options in MS DOS screen:

  • Safe mode
  • Safe mode with networking
  • Safe mode with command prompt
  • Enable boot logging
  • Enable VGA logging
  • Last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
  • Directory services restore mode (windows domain controllers only)
  • Debugging mode
  • Disable automatic restart on system failure
  • Start windows normally
  • Reboot
  • Return to OS choices menu

F10 key - For selecting Menu bar

The F10 key is used to select the menu bar. F10 key can be pressed when browsing My Computer or when viewing any folder or its contents. It can also be used to select the menu bar of Microsoft word or any other file/application consisting of a menu bar. The F10 key selects the menu bar consisting of the following buttons (when viewing the contents of a folder):

  • File
  • Edit
  • View
  • Favorites
  • Tools
  • Help

F11 key - Resize (Full screen mode)

F11 key is a very important & necessary key. F11 performs a very important task. F11 key switches the current window to full screen mode. That is, removes the menu bar & the start menu so that we are able to view the current window in the full screen, utilizing the full monitor size.

Notice that the start menu has disappeared along with the menu bar.

Note: To revert back to the same state as it was before, just press the F11 key again.

F12 key - Save as (the save as dialog box opens)

F12 is an important key and you should memorize the significance of this key because this is a shortcut key of a very frequently used feature in Microsoft Office Word & other word processors. When working in a word processor, pressing F12 key opens up the “Save As” dialog box for saving the current document.

Note that the “Save As” dialog box opens up as soon as the F12 key is pressed when working on a word processor program.
